Joshua Coyne - Music Man Josh

Musicians are very giving people. Throughout history, very few musicians (performers, conductors, composers, music educators) have achieved success without the friendship, mentoring and support of other giving musicians. Josh has received incredible support from many, many teachers, mentors, heroes and friends since discovering music at the age of two. Here are just a few.

musicmanjosh > Josh, age 7, with Itzhak Perlman backstage at Ravinia. Check out the tapes on his violin. Josh could say Itzhak before he was three. He called him Ithak. He has this picture framed, along with a note from Itzhak written on one of his early Suzuki books.

It's amazing Josh survived this invitation. It came three hours before Itzhak's concert began, so a four hour drive from Iowa happened in three, with Josh playing his little violin the whole way to Chicago!

By the time Josh was four, he was very much aware of some really amazing violinists and the differences in their styles. He couldn't pronounce most of their last names, so he talked about them all using just their first names. He would say, "Ithak does it like this, but Ithac likes it this way." "I liked it when I saw Pinchas, and I got to see Joshua Bell! He knows how to play Red Violin." So we made up this name, comprised of the names of many of his heroes. It was Itsy(Itzhak Perlman)Witsy, Pinkie (Pinchas Zukerman) Winkie, Genuinely (Yehudi Menuhin )Menuhinly, Joshua (Joshua Bell) Boboshua Coyne.

musicmanjosh > This is one of my very favorite musicians, Joshua Bell. I have been going to Josh's concerts since I was four years old. I love his music and I love his violin. A lot of the music I play, I learned straight from Josh's recordings before I could even read music. I have a copy of an interview I taped when I was eight years old, and when I was asked about my favorite music, I said it was The Nutcracker and The Red Violin. Besides being one of the greatest violinists in the world, I think Josh Bell is a great guy, and I really look up to him both personally and professionally.

This is my friend, Marvin Hamlisch. I met Marvin in Summer 2007. I have always wanted to meet Marvin, because I think I am a lot like him. I am just learning, but I think about music all the time. I hear music, and I know Marvin does too. Marvin Hamlisch is one of the greatest and most famous composers in the world. Marvin is mentoring me, and he is giving me a chance few people ever get in life. I love Marvin. When I listen to his music, I know I better listen very carefully to every word of advice he gives me. He's amazing!

musicmanjosh > This is Marin Alsop, the new music director of the Baltimore Symphony. My mom and I love to go to the Baltimore Symphony concerts. Marin is a great conductor, and the orchestra is fun to watch and hear. I’m just getting to know Marin, but I’m learning a lot from watching her conduct, and listening to her talk after the concerts. I’m very proud of her, and I’m happy so many people are going to the BSO concerts. I’m composing some music for Marin, because I like her, and I think Jonathan Carney and the BSO musicians are really good and not afraid to have fun with music.
